Biodegradeble PLA Clear Cups
These Biodegradable clear cups are made from PLA – a sustainable plant-based bioplastic made from corn. PLA is 100% compostable and biodegradable and can also be recycled. They are BPA- and toxin-free, and as firm and clear as regular plastic. PLA is heat sensitive, so use these for cold and ambient food and drinks only.
Composting PLA
PLA should be disposed of in an industrial composting facility. The microorganisms combined with a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius and humidity above 80% will ensure that the PLA completely biodegrades. When sufficient quantities of PLA waste become available, it is viable to convert the material back into its base component of lactic acid.
PLA can be recycled in some parts of the world, but South Africa currently has no dedicated recycling plants specifically for PLA. Composting remains the best end-of life option for PLA, although even when sent to landfill PLA offers significant benefits when compared to oil based plastic.
